The East Asian segment of the Canadian population is a little more than 5% of the total, according to Statistics Canada, 2006.This includes Chinese Canadians and immigrants from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Most of them are concentrated within the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia. Other East Asian immigrants have come from Korea and Japan, although their numbers are small. The largest segment is the Chinese Canadians who started coming into Canada in the early 20th century. With hard work, they have built a flourishing life for immigrants that followed in their footsteps. Statscan says that the Chinese community in Canada is also growing considerably faster than the overall population. Between 1996 and 2001, for example, the number of people of Chinese origin rose by 19%, and today comprise a little more than 4% of the total number of Canadians. Most report religious affiliations as Protestant, Roman Catholic or Buddhist and speak either Mandarin or Cantonese. The Korean community is the 7th largest non-European ethnic group in the country, after the Chinese, East Indian, Filipino, Jamaican, Vietnamese, and Lebanese populations.
